Coat of Arms

[Buxtehude CoA] image provided by Pete Loeser

In a blue shield are two golden crossed keys and a black cross above the keys. The whole is topped by a helmet with blue and yellow scarves and another black cross in the crest, which is placed between two horns quarterly charged blue and golden.
Meaning:
The coat of arms is based upon the oldest seal of the city, which was already used in 1304. The keys are symbolizing the founder and sovereign, the archbishop of Bremen, Giselbert von Brunkhorst, whose family also had those keys in their coat of arms. The keys have a second meaning being the keys of St.Peter (Math.16, 18-19). The cross is symbolising the Bishopric of Verden, to which the city belonged due to terms of church administration.
