Niederrieden Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, two bulrushes Argent in saltire with stem and leaf of the same, over all a crozier issuant Or in pale.
Meaning:
The village was first mentioned in 838. Its name is derived from "Ried", which means a swampy soil, represented by the bulrushes in the arms. Since the 13th century the village was split into Ober-, Mittel- and Unterrieden, i.e. the upper, central and lower village. Since the 15th century their had been only Oberrieden and Niederrieden, a synonym replacing Unterrieden. The crozier is alluding to the Benedictine Ottobeuren Imperial Abbey, which was mentioned as manorial lord in 1152 and 1235 by Papal charters. Later the abbey gained complete control and kept it until 1802. The tinctures red and white are also reminding on the abbey.
