Westerheim Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale, at dexter Or an impending dove Argent above and a Maltese patriarchal cross Gules beneath, at sinister Sable a rosette Or.
Meaning:
Due to the chronicle of Ottobeuren, written in 1180, the village was part of the endowment of the abbey, which was founded in 764. In the 14th century the village was divided into ea lower village and an upper village. Both were united in 1818. The Benedictine Ottobeuren Imperial Abbey could enlarge its possessions during the centuries. Since 1451 it had the low level cognisance in Unterwestheim, the lower village. It furthermore ruled both villages until 1803 due to its secularisation. The rosette is taken from the arms of the abbey. The cross and the dove are alluding to the Hospital of the Holy Ghost of Memmingen. The hospital had the right to appoint reeves and the right of patronage with all its sinecures. When the Hospital was split in 1365, the privilege of sinecures was given to the Upper Hospital, operated by the Order of the Holy Ghost. The cross, a Maltese cross with two horizontal crossbars, is taken from the orders arms.
