Elster was first mentioned as a village in 1378. In the 15th century it was acquired by the Electors of Sachsen. In 1669 the healing power of the local mineral spas was discovered, in 1846 a bath house was built. Since 1848 Elster was very popular among the Saxonian upper class. Bad Elster gained city rights in 1935. The magpie (German: Elster ) is only punning, as the name is referring to the namesake river. The other charges are symbolsing the mineral spas and the landscape.
