Overview

Olmedo canton (6,368 inhabitants) was established on 24 February 1997, separating from Paltas.
The canton's namesake is the lawyer Joaquín de Olmedo (1780-1847), first President of the Free Province of Guayaquil (1820-1822) and first Vice President of the Republic of Ecuador (1830-1831). A noted poet, Olmedo wrote several patriotic works (Canción del 9 de octubre [1821], considered as the first Ecuadorian anthem; Canto a Bolivár [1825]; Canción del 10 de agosto [1837], which inspired the present-day national anthem; Obras poéticas [1848]); he is also credited the design of the flag of Guayaquil.
