Presentation of Cs

Ciudadanos (Citizens; website) originates in the Ciudadanos de Catalunya (Citizens of Catalonia) platform initiated by a group of noted Catalan intellectuals; among them was Albert Boadella, the founder of Tabarnia. The platform's founders claimed to represent the Catalan citizens who did not feel represented by the existing political parties.
A first manifesto, written on 7 June 2005 and unveiled on 21 June 2005, announced the set-up of a new political, nation-wide party. A second manifesto was presented on 4 March 2006 in the Tivoli theater, Barcelona, and on 9 May 2006 in the Reina Victoria theater, Madrid.

During the Constituent Congress held on 8 and 9 July 2006, the name of the new party was adopted as Ciudadanos-Partido de la Ciudadanía (Cs) (Citizens - Citizenship Party). Albert Rivera (b. 1979) was elected president of the new party.
On 1 November 2006, Ciudadanos secured three Representatives in the Catalan regional elections, becoming the first Spanish party initiated from a citizen's platform to gain parliamentary representation. Ciudadanos' representation in the Catalan Parliamentary increased to 9 after the elections held on 25 November 2012 and 25 after the elections held on 27 September 2015, being the second most voted party (17,9% of the votes). In the elections organized on 21 December 2017 following the proclamation of independence and the suppression of the local institutions by the Spanish government, Ciudadanos obtained more than on million votes (25.3%), securing 36 seats.
In the general elections held on 20 December 2015, Ciudadanos obtained 14% of the votes, securing 40 seats at the Parliament. The party supported Pedro Sánchez, from the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE), as a potential Prime Minister. This failed, leading to new general elections held on 25 June 2016, Ciudadanos obtained 13% of the votes, securing only 32 Representatives.

Ciudadanos presents itself as a "constitutionalist, post-nationalist, liberal and progressivist" party. Once defined as center-leftist, the party dropped in 2017 references to social-democracy and adopted "progressivist liberalism", which caused debates among the party's founders and officials.

Flag of Cs

The flag of Ciudadanos (photo) is white with an orange-red right-angle triangle in canton and the party's emblem at fly.

The party's emblems are prescribed in Article 3 of the party's Statutes (text), last amended on 5 February 2017 during its 4th General Assembly, held in Coslada.
"The party's acronym is 'Cs' and it logotype is formed of an orange right-angled triangle placed beneath the 'C' of the party's acronym. The symbol can be modified by Agreement of the Executive Committee without amending the present Statutes."

This new graphical identity, designed by the party's communication department, in partnership with the The Bold agency, is expected to convey a more modern (Ciudadanos claims to represent "modernity", as opposed to the Conservatives, the Socialists and the Populists), transparent (powerful, limpid and iconic), and more open (to the whole society, excluding none) image.
The font used is Circular Black, "a versatile sans serif, simple, clear and straightforward" family of eight styles.

The new emblem is based on the previous one, dropping the frame and keeping only the lower triangle to create a "very simplified secondary space" and using "two hierarchized elements arranged in a harmonic manner". The chromatic set is made of "a combination of white and orange able to transmit more limpidity, modernity and freshness".
[Graphic charter]

The original apostrophe, deemed unnecessary and, sometimes, specifically connected with the Catalan origin of the party, was dropped, simplifying the acronym from "C's" to "Cs".

Before 2017, the party used an orange flag with the emblem of the time, counter-colored, here "C's" in orange placed on a white phylactery and "Ciudadanos", in white, beneath the phylactery (photo, photo, photo).

The previous emblem dates back to 2009, with minor modifications in 2013. It was set up after the platform's original graphic identity, designed by a professional designer, Rafa Celda. Subsequent modifications were performed by The Bold.

Flag used by Ciudadanos/Ciutadans in the Catalan 2017 autonomous elections

Ciudadanos/Ciutadans (Wikipedia) used in the autonomous elections of 21 December 2017 a logo expressing its trademark position concerning the place of Catalonia within the Spanish state and the prospective role of the European Union.
The logo was also used on a white flag (
photo).

The logo has the shape of an iconic heart - symmetric, made from four circular arcs, convex all around with an upper vertex invected. It is horizontally divided with its bottom part blue showing five yellow stars in an arch (suggesting a fragment of the EU flag, but with the stars erroneously pointing to the bottom) and the upper part divided vertically with the right side filled with the pattern of the plain Spanish flag and the left side filled with the pattern of the Catalonian flag.
