Presentation of Parrillas

The municipality of Parrillas (343 inhabitants in 2018; 5,103 ha; municipal website) is located on the border with the Province of Ávila (Castilla y León), 129 km west of Toledo and 4O km north-west of Talavera de la Reina.

Parrillas is named for the Castilian word parrilla, a diminutive form of parra, "grapevine".
Parrillas belonged to the County of Oropesa until 1642, when granted the status of villa by King Philip IV.

Symbols of Parrillas

The flag and arms of Parrillas are prescribed by Order No. 57, issued on 4 April 2018 by the Government of Castilla-La Mancha and published on 23 April 2018 in the official gazette of Castilla-La Mancha, No. 78, p. 11,507 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular panel, whose length is 1.5 times the width. Quartered in four parts of equal size, the upper at hoist and the lower at fly, blue and the other, white, in the center the coat of arms of Parrillas.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Or a holly oak eradicated vert, 2. Checky of 15 pieces azure and argent. Grafted in base, Argent a grapevine leaf vert. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The flag was inaugurated on 11 August 2018 during the celebration of the village's festival.

The former coat of arms of Parrillas was prescribed by Decree No. 93, issued on 29 October 1985 by the Government of Castilla-La Mancha and published on 5 November 1985 in the official gazette of Castilla-La Mancha, No. 44, p. 1,635 (text).
The coat of arms is described as follows:

Coat of arms: Per fess, 1a. Checky eight pieces azure and seven pieces argent (Toledo), 1b. Argent a holly oak eradicated vert, 2. Or a grapevine leaf vert. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.
The arms were designed by José Luis Ruz Márquez & Ventura Leblic García, which had been commissioned on 6 May 1982 to design them.

The Royal Academy of History recognized that the charges used on the proposed arms, "Per pale, 1. Or a holly oak eradicated vert, 2. Checky of 7 pieces argent and 7 pieces azure. Grafted in base, Or a grapevine leaf vert. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.", were very appropriate: Parrillas once belonged to the House of Oropesa, has many holly oaks growing on its territory, and has grapevince (parra) for namesake, recalling the first plant cultivated in the area. However, the zelacious Academy changed the order and colors of the quarters, without providing any reason, to the design eventually adopted.
The modified, present-day's coat of arms is, therefore, a re-establishment of the original proposal with a change of or to argent for the field of the third quarter.
