Introduction

The municipality of Alhama de Aragón (1,173 inhabitants in 2007; 31.11 sq. km), located in the Province of Zaragoza, is famous for its hot springs, already known at the Roman times.

The movie "Los jueves, milagro" ("Miracles of Thursday"), by Luis García Berlanga (1957), was shot in Alhama de Aragón, portrayed as a village named Fuentecilla , where the villagers invent a religious miracle to reactivate the local spa. The movie has an international (Spanish, Italian and American) cast, the main role being played by Richard Basehart (1914-1984, mostly known for "Moby Dick" and "La Strada").

Description

The flag and coat of arms of Alhama de Aragón are shown on a website dedicated to the municipal symbols in Aragón (to be presented separately as a main source of information). The flag and coat of arms of Alhama de Aragón are prescribed by Decree 382/2002, signed on 17 December 2002 by the President of the Government of Aragón, whose sole Article says:

"The Municipality of Alhama de Aragón, Province of Zaragoza, is allowed to adopt a municipal coat of arms and a municipal flag, designed as follows:

Flag: Red panel in proportions 2/3. A wavy stripe light blue along the ascending diagonal, flanked in upper hoist and lower fly by a tower yellow with port and windows red.

Black-and-white line drawings of the coat of arms and flag are provided.

On 23 April 2008 (Aragón national day), the flag and coat of arms of Alhama de Aragon were inaugurated, as reported by "Terra Actualidad - VMT." This seems to indicate that the adopted symbols had not been unveiled yet, since the flag is described as in the Decree. The main symbolic element used on the flag and coat of arms is water, recalling its importance for the local economy as rivers, sources and hot springs. The coat of arms was first designed after 1916, but the modern coat of arms differs from it in some elements: field gules, shape and position of the fish, shape of the Royal crown.
