Presentation of SGNC

The Société Générale de Navigation sur la Haute Seine et les Canaux du Centre (General Company of Navigation on the Upper Seine and the Central Canals) inland navigation company was founded in 1877 in Paris. The company was renamed in 1951 Société Générale de Navigation Fluviale (General Company of River Navigation).

Aka Les Oiseaux (The Birds), the company operated for a while a river tugboat called Fauvette (Warbler). Built in Cologne (Germany) in 1928, the tugboat was active until 1956, then transformed into a barge pusher used until 1974. In 1987, the municipality of Poses (Eure, Normandy) purchased the Fauvette, doomed to destruction; registered as an historical monument on 13 March 1992, the Fauvette is managed, on float, by the "Association des Amis de la Batellerie".

A share of the company, released in 1935, is illustrated with the company house flag, shown as a triangular orange flag with a white border and charged with the white letters "S.G.N.C.".
The simplified acronym of the company might reflect a previous, simpler name, Société Générale de Navigation sur les Canaux du Centre. A. Desaunais & P. Simond (Roanne et la Haute Loire navigable, Les Études rhôdaniennes, 11, 39-52, 1935) list among the users of the port of Roanne the Société Générale Anonyme de Navigation sur les Canaux du Centre, presented as a subsidiary of the Société des Établissements de Saint-Gobain, a big industrial group.
On the share, "FLUVIALE" has been added with a stamp after "NAVIGATION", indicating yet another change in the corporate name.
