Overview

The Iraqi Army in modern times was established in 1921, after the British installed a Monarchy, becoming the RIrA (Royal Iraqi Army). Before that, from 1533 until 1918 the Iraqi military was part of the Ottoman Empire. Its most immediate predecessors were the Iraq Levies (several Battalions of troops tasked to guard the Royal Air Force bases from which the British controlled Iraq since transfer of authority after World War I). Then after the 1958 coup d'etat, the name "Royal" was dropped.

"Originally the 1st Division was one of the four initial Divisions of the Iraqi Army, active by 1941. It later became the 1st Mechanized Division. It was disbanded in 2003 and later reactivated in 2005. The 1st Division was originally formed from the battalions of the IIF (Iraqi Intervention Force). The 1st Division consists of four Brigades (1st Brigade, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Brigade and 4th Brigade) and the The 1st Brigade (original IIF) was considered the 'elite' of the Iraqi Army and as such, was deployed around the country much like a fire brigade.

In the Ministry of Defence of Iraq's official website, there's a video of reported captured terrorists who are conducting several attacks in the recent fighting in the country that led to the capture of Mosul, Tikrit and other cities by several armed movements, most notably the ISIS (or ISIL). In this video, there's supposed to be an Iraqi Army Infantry Unit flag in the background where these captured fighters are being interrogated. The flag seen in the background during the interrogation, follows the same pattern as a flag reported by Eugene Ipavec on December 27, 2010.
