[flag of Honda Tadakatsu]
by Jaume Ollé

He served under Tokugawa Ieyasu after the Battle of Okehazama and participated in more than 50 battles as an advance guard. He was given 100,000 goku of Otaki Castle in Kazusa Province when Tokugawa Ieyasu moved him to the Kanto region in 1590. The war banner was 胴黒Doguro with kanji initials of his family name 本Hon in black. The Doguro was white flag divided into three equal parts, with black horizontal stripe in the middle. It is an excellent design for a military flag, as it is easy to recognize the unit to which it belongs from a distance.
