The emblem consists of three cobalt green Prefectural tree Akita butterbur leaves with kanji word "大學" (=university) in royal blue. The emblem was selected as the first prize winner at a special council meeting on September 16, 1949, as a result of a contest for a prize to commemorate the opening of Akita University. The design was conceived by Mr. Yuzuru Nakamura, an instructor at the Faculty of Mines at that time.
