Located in Saitama City Saitama Prefecture and established in 1949.
The university flag has purple background with a white emblem in the center.
The university emblem is a combination of kanji the word "大學" and “Mutsume”=six eyes. The name "Mutsume"=six eyes is derived from the name of Saitama, which is the name of the area around the ancient burial mounds that once stood here.
Many comma-shaped jewels called magatama, which were decorated on the chests of ancient people, have been found in these tumuli. These jewels were more a spiritual symbol of hope for good fortune than decorative objects.
The prefectural flag of Saitama and the emblem of Saitama University, for example, have the meaning of praying for people's good fortune by means of an emblem with comma-shaped jewels magatama. The word "mutsume," with its six jewels, also has the meaning of "harmonious" (mutsume).
