"Old" flag (before 2008)

[former city flag Astana] after "Wikipedia"; redrawn by Valentin Poposki

The Wikipedia shows the former flag [before 2008] of the City of Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astana. However, it seems that this is the photo of the actual flag, so I tried to make a reconstruction.

[Astana flag] by Tomislav Šipek, 25 August 2016

The flag of Astana already has a descriptive featured on FOTW, but now I have presented the graphic layout. There is represented the old flag of Astana, as with blue emblem, as a source there is Wikipedia. But the page is a photograph with a different flag (red and gold rays on flag).

New flag and COA of Astana, Kazakhstan you can see on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astana (original source: http://www.astana.kz/kazakhstan-symbols.html)
Tomislav Šipek, 24 December 2008

New COA of Astana adopted July, 5, 2008 by Maslikhat (city council) of Astana. President of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbaev took part in disigning of the COA.
Victor Lomantsov, 30 December 2008

The (light) blue and yellow rayed background reminds of the Soviet Air Force flag (and Russian). A connection would not be unimaginable.

Flag after city renaming to Nur-Sultan, 2019

[seal of Nur Sultan City] after "Wikipedia"

Nur-Sultan or Nursultan (Kazakh: Íұð-Ñұëòàí; Russian: Íóð-Ñóëòàí), previously Astana[a] (Kazakh and Russian: ACTAHA), is the capital city of Kazakhstan. The city of Nur-Sultan in Kazakhstan modified the CoA. Instead of the inscription "ASTANA" in Cyrillic letters, the inscription "NUR-SULTAN" in Latin letters is now used. A change of flag has not been reported.

[flag City of Nur-Sultan] by Rob Raeside

The inscription on the coat of arms of the Kazakh capital will be changed. The Cyrillic inscription "ACTAHA" on the emblem of the capital will be changed to "NUR-SULTAN" in the Latin script. The remaining elements of the coat of arms are preserved in the previous version. On April 24, 2019, Saken Yesirkep, deputy head of the State Institution for the Development of Languages and Archival Affairs of the City of Nur-Sultan, according to the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 6 dated March 23, 2019 "On renaming the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan - the city of Astana - to the city of Nur-Sultan", as well as paragraph 3 The Law "On the Status of the Capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan" submitted for consideration by the Public Council of the city of Nur-Sultan the question of amending the decision of the Maslikhat of Astana dated June 5, 2008 No. 109/16-IV "On the symbols of the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan - the city of Astana."

Valentin Poposki, 29 February 2019

The official law on the city symbols, but it seems to has been dated to when the symbols of the former name, Astana, were decided in 2008 and only replaced the city name in the legal document.

Baikonur

Baikonur is a city in Kazakhstan currently leased and administered by the Russian Federation until 2050. It was constructed to serve the Baikonur Cosmodrome with administrative offices and employee housing. City and Cosmodrome heve their own flags.

Baikonur Cosmodrome flag

[Baikonur Cosmodrome flag] found by Ben Cahoon at https://space.stackexchange.com. B/W photo of this flag was found by Olivier Touzeau in 2003

2, June, 2003, during the "Up to the Minute" news program this morning they showed a close-up of the flag flying at the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The flag looked green, with a crescent moon facing up and slightly to the left. There was writing of some sort around the moon, but what language is was I am not certain. However, at the hoist, in white letters stacked one letter over another to the bottom of the hoist (with space between the edges of the flag) was BAIKONUR (ÁÀÈÊÎÍÓÐ).

Baikonur Cosmodrome flag. "improved" version"

[Baikonur flag] found by Victor Lomantsov at SB.BY “Belarus today” (photo made in 2026)

New flag of Baikonur found at https://space.stackexchange.com/.. The "cradling hands" flag is the flag of the town of Baikonur, while the "globe and stars" is the flag of the cosmodrome itself. –
Ben Cahoon, 22 April 2026

The main motif of this flag design is an Earth globe: It is centered somewhere on the north Atlantic, showing all but the NWmost of the Americas and most of Africa and Europe — with most of Russia, the whole of Kazakhstan, and Baikonur itself beyond the horizon.
If I were a betting man, I’d wager this flag design was made, or at least “enhanced”, with some sort of wasteful, tacky automated process.

Baikonur City flag

[Baikonur flag] by Chrystian Kretowicz

[Baikonur coat of arms] by Chrystian Kretowicz

The official emblem of Baikonur was established by the decree of the Head of Administration (Nr.405 dated November 1998) In the center of the vertical axis there is a main image of the lift-off of the spaceship and the human hands. The composition introduced recognizable objects, symbolizing scientific research in the opening of the sacrament of the universe. Rockets into space hands of a man resembling the construction of a launching pad - a symbol of Man - the creator of space technology, science and daring work, fascinating space and protecting our globe from environmental and other crises. Stylized in a tulip fire - a symbol of local nature. Kolorit emblem is based on dark blue, light blue and ocher colors.
The flag of Baikonur was introduced on April 27, 2001 by the decree of the Head of Administration Nr.145. Flag of Baikonur is a rectangular cloth with a blue image of two hands, of which the background of the starry sky and the Earth, the spacecraft will start, and the inscription "Baikonur" in gold letters. The width of the flag to its length is 2:3.

The rocket closely resembles a Proton heavy booster (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proton_%28rocket%29; whose only lanch site is Baikonur).
