Presentation of USTKE

The Union Syndicale des Travailleurs Kanaks et des Exploités (USTKE - Union of Kanak and Exploited Workers; Union des Syndicats des Travailleurs Kanaks et des Exploités until 1986), founded on 5 December 1981, is a confederation of branch workers' unions in New Caledonia (website).
Like the UTG in French Guiana, the USTKE is linked with the (continental) French union Confédération Générale du Travail (CGT - Work General Confederation) by "particular and privileged relations" (Article 4 of the USTKE Statutes). One of the founding members in 1984 of the independentist party FLNKS, the USTKE supports the "Socialist Kanak independence" of New Caledonia (Preamble of the USTKE Statutes). The USTKE founded in 2007 its own party, the Labour Party (Parti travailliste).

Flags of USTKE

The flag of the USTKE (photo) is horizontally divided green-red with a blue triangle placed along the hoist. "USTKE" is written in white letters over the green and red stripe. A yellow disc, placed over the intersection of the three flag fields, is charged with a black rooftop spear, a black and white plant, a white hand holding a black map of New Caledonia, and a black and white traditional hut. The motto of the USTKE, "Usines tribus même combat" (Plants [and] tribes[,] same struggle), written in white letters, is placed under the yellow disk. The colours, the yellow disk and the rooftop spear recall the FLNKS flag.

The flag can be seen in use during the 1 May 2010 demonstrations, as well as a red flag charged with the big, white letters "USTKE" (photo).
