The four rings symbolize four "golden" islands in blue sea. The municipality consists of the entire Hadseløya island and parts of the islands of Austvågøy, Hinnøy and Langøya.
Not counting Svalbard, Hinnøya is the larges island in Norway and Langøya the third, while Austvågøy the ninth largest.
