Coat of Arms

[Alquerubim commune CoA] image by Valentin Poposki, 13 feb 202s

Shield Or with base wavy of Azure and Argent, a crescent recumbent Sable between two storks vigilant Azure armed Gules and both standing on rocks Sable, in chief a dragon Gules. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials "ALQUERUBIM".
The dragon is one of the attributes of Saint Marina the Great Martyr, the local patron saint and is symbolising the recapture (reconquista) and re-Christianization of Portugal. The crescent is symbolising the Moorish occupation and is alluding to the Arab name of the commune, which means "Lands of the Kin". The storks are representing the local fauna, storks are very common in the region. The base wavy is representing Vouga River, the border of the commune and an important factor of the local development. The mural crown is signifying the commune as a town, which had been seat of a municipality until the middle of the 19th century.
