It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered background of yellow and blue (town rank).

The arms are Azure a castle Or masoned Sable with port and windows Gules, in base a fountain effervescent Argent and Azure. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CASTELO NOVO".
"Castelo novo" means "new castle", making these arms partly canting.

Castelo Novo Commune is one of the 23 communes of Fundão Municipality (q.v.); it had 406 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 40,51 km².
