About the Flag

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain white field.

Coat of arms

Shield Vert, two winged hands Argent carrying a plaque Sable, in base two wheat ears Or tied of the same set in orle, in chief a cross patty Gules fimbriated Or and charged with a Greek cross Argent. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials: "LAJES - PRAIA DA VITÓRIA" or "VILA DAS LAJES - PRAIA DA VITÓRIA", as to be seen here.
Meaning:
The winged hands may allude to archangel St. Michael, the local patron saint. The plaque (Port.: laje) is a canting element. The wheat ears are representing agriculture. The cross is alluding to the Order of the Knights of Christ.

Lajes Commune is one of the 11 communes of the Praia da Vitória Municipality; it had 3744 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 11.2 km².
