Le Tampon is the fourth-largest commune in Réunion, on the south-central part of the island of Réunion, on the heights of the town of Saint-Pierre. The town spreads over the slopes that descend from the Plaine des Cafres towards the ocean. Until then an administrative section of Saint-Pierre, the commune of Le Tampon was created in 1925. There are 80,800 inhabitants on 165.43 km².

In 1830, Count Gabriel Le Coat de Kerveguen settled in the area where the commune of Le Tampon would later be created and built up an empire by appropriating almost all the concessions in the south. In 1859, when the island lacked cash, he introduced his own currency there, two hundred and twenty-seven thousand demonetized kreutzers that he had brought back from the Austrian Empire, which he struck with a "K" and who would also be locally called "kervéguens". With this, he payed for Indian labor working on his land. Twenty years later, the currency was declared illegal.

Flag of Le Tampon

In 2015, a logo was created, adding to the coat of arms (with FLORAL transformed into Florale, feminine, to qualify the municipality) the mentions : République française - Département de la Réunion - Commune du Tampon - La France dans l'Océan Indien. This "logo" is now on the flag (photo, 2019).

The former flag was white with the coat of arms and the words "Commune du Tampon" (photo and photo from this page, photo).

The coat of arms of the commune was created in 1965. It is blazoned: Azure chaussé Vert, a mountain Argent surmounted by an orchid flower Or. This coat of arms symbolizes tourism, with the gorges that surround the town: Bras de la Plaine and Rivière des Remparts; and the wealth of the south of Réunion, symbolized by two cornucopias surrounding the shield and the orchid. On representations of the coat of arms, the mountain is often shown in purple. The shield is surmounted by a mural crown with 5 towers, with an open book bearing the word FLORAL.
