Cugir (31,000 inhabitants) was established in 1493. The town is located in the west-central region of Romania, in the county of Alba about 45 kilometers south-west of Alba-Iulia, the capital of the county, and 300 meters a.s.l. in the Surianu Mountains. A detailed history of the town is available in English. The motto "Longum iter est per praecepta, breve et efficax per exempla" reads "The journey is long through advice, but efficient through examples". It was coined by Seneca, Letters to Lucilius, VI.
