Qalb Tounes (قلب تونس - In the Heart of Tunisia) was established on 20 June
2019 by Houda Knani, as the Tunisian Party for Social Peace, and renamed to its
current name on 25 June 2019, when Nabil Karoui became its president.
Nabil Karoui (b. 1963), a fluent businessman owner of the Karoui & Karoui World
advertisement group and of the Nessma TV channel, was one of the founders of
Nidaa Tounes, which he left in April 2017. Soon after having announced he would
be candidate to the presidential election and a potential winner, he was
indicted for money laundering on 8 July 2019. Arrested on 23 August but not
sentenced yet, he was allowed to compete and obtained 525,517 votes (15.6%) in
the first round, advancing to the second round, where he was defeated by Kaïs
Saïed, obtaining 1,042,894 votes (27.3%).
In the general election that
followed, Qalb Tounes obtained 416,040 votes (14.5%, 2nd most voted party),
securing 38 seats (out of 217) at the Assembly of People's Representatives.
