Presentation of the HDP

The HDP was founded in 2012 as a left-wing alternative party. The party aims to represent the less privileged groups in Turkish society, Kurds, women and LGBT groups. Opponents allege that it is only a Kurdish party, linked with the outlawed PKK. On a regional/local level it is cooperating with the DBP.
The June 2015 elections resulted in a share of 13,12% of the votes, thus surpassing the 10% threshold and entering the Parliament with 80 seats (out of 550); the November 2015 elections somewhat reduced the success to 10,75% and 59 seats (out of 550).

Flags of the HDP

There is a huge number of different flag variants, mainly differing in the flag shape and the background colour. It is obviously party policy to display the differently coloured flags together to support the impression of a broad (rainbow) coalition making up the party.
The symbol of the HDP is a stylized tree, consisting of a purple trunk, green leaves and stars in different colours (red, black, blue, light blue, green, yellow, purple) over the party abbreviation in black.

The HDP uses hanging flags as well. One version shows the logo in a white circle on a unicoloured background of purple, red, green or yellow (photos: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]).

A different version of the hanging flags (photo) shows the tree in a white disk, beneath the disk the party initials in black, all on a background of green, purple, yellow or red.

Another version of the HDP flag is vertical with a unicoloured background of purple, red, green, yellow, pink or light blue (photos: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]); at the top there is the party abbreviation, in bottom the top third of the tree, all in white.

The HDP uses flags with a white background as well. The horizontal ones come in (at least) three different varieties (photos: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]:
- white background with tree over party initials and full party name in black;
- white background with tree over party initials in black;
- white background with the tree at the hoist and large party initials in black at the fly; this is used as small table flag only, it seems (photo).

Another group of HDP flag variants are the vertical ones that are not used as hanging flags, but waved during demonstrations, attached to a flagstaff along the longer side. These come in (at least) three varieties:
- a rather high version with the tree logo over the letters "H D P" in black under each other; this is the most frequent variety (photos: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]);
- not so long, with the tree over the full name of the party (in three rows) (photo, photo);
- the third version (photo) shows the party initials in top, the tree in the centre and the full name of the party in base; interestingly, in this case the party name is not correct ("Halkların Demokrasi Partisi" instead of "Halkların Demokratik Partisi").

The HDP also use four versions of the hanging flag in white:
- the first one shows the tree on a white background over the party initials; the party initials are rather small (photos: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]); occasionally, this is also used (rotated 90°) as a horizontal flag during demonstrations (photo, no longer online);
- the second one shows the tree on a white background over the party initials; the party initials are larger (photos: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]);
- the third one shows the tree on a white background over the (large) party initials and the full party name (photo);
- the fourth shows (photo) beneath the tree the party initials in black.

Flag pointed at the bottom (photos: Œ[1], [2],[3], [4], [5], [6]) come in the usual colours, purple, red, green, yellow, and white, showing the tree logo with party initials in a white circle.

Similar flags, swallow-tailed at the bottom, are used together with the single-pointed flags. All of these are used on long lines, alternating the different colours. Interestingly, the white pointed ones are alternated with the swallow-tailed flags of the other colours, whereas the white swallow-tailed ones are alternated with the pointed ones of the other colours.

Pennants of roughly the same design as the third series of hanging flags shown above are used (photos: [1], A HREF="http://www.hdp.org.tr/images/UserFiles/images/Spot/atasehir.jpg">[2], [3], [4]). They come with a background of purple, red, green, yellow, pink, or light blue; at the top there is the party abbreviation, in bottom the top third of the tree, all in white.

The white pennant is different in design, showing the whole tree in full colours in the center of the white field, without any party name or party initials.

The beach flags of HDP (photos: [1], [2],[3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]) are vertical flags with a white head over purple, red or green; in the white head there is the tree over the full party name in black; the coloured bottom part of the flag contains the party abbreviation in white, one letter over the other.
There is also a yellow variant, which is slightly different from the other variants, as it is fully yellow and does not contain a white field; the party abbreviation is in black instead of white.

HDP Women's Council

THe HDP Women's Council (Kadın Meclisi) uses a green flag with the party's emblem in white and the writing "HDP / KADIN MECLİSİ", and, maybe, flags of the same pattern with a different backgtround color (photo).
