The emblem, adopted in May 2019, features the eight-pointed Seljuq star. The logo was selected among some 100 proposals presented by five companies.
The traditional meaning of the eight angles are: compassion, praise to the Lord, generosity, loyalty, secret, truth, patience, and compassion.
The red color is a symbol of fertility, efficacy, solidity, reliability, comfort, endurance, simplicity, friendship, a well as open-mindedness, commitment, excitement, innovation, move, change and transformation.

The former flag of Elbistan (photo) was white with the municipality's former emblem. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality".
The emblem, used for the last seven years, features the Great Mosque, Mt. Shar and the skyline of the thermal power plant of Afşin.

The Great Mosque (presentation) is of unknown exact construction date. The inscription engraved on the main gate is dated 637 (1239-1240), under the rule of the Seljuq Sultan of Rûm Kaykhusraw II (1237-1246) The inscription also mentions Emir Mübârizüddin Çavlı. It is believed that the mosque was built be the sultan and that the inscription could have been brought from another mosque built by the emir.
Destroyed during the sack of the town by Shah Ismail of Perdia in 1507, the mosque was rebuilt in Ottoman style by Ali Bey (1515-1533), appointed governor of the former Emirate of Dulkadir by Ottoman Sultan Selim I.

The Afşin power plant (photo) was represented on the reverse of a 5,000 lira banknote used from 1990 to 1994 (photo).
