County flag lovers rejoice! Cochise County Arizona unveils flag at their county fair to be used for the state centennial in 2012. Though, I was disappointed to see the chosen flag is a near exact template of the Yavapai County flag and a run off of the Arizona state flag. Apparently county flag creativity and diversity is at an all-time low in the United States at the moment. Not to mention the contest attracted a mere 79 entries; with some sending multiple designs.

The resolution adopting the flag says it is the official Arizona Centennial flag for Cochise County, not the county flag.

On September 13, 2011, the winning design in the flag contest was approved by the Board of Supervisors as the Cochise County Centennial Flag. For reference, all of this information is from Resolution 11-39.

The judges for the “Design A Flag Contest” were: Trudy Berry, Matt Borowiec, Becky Orozco, Jim Riley, Les Thompson and Rick Whipple. The winner of the contest was announced at the 87th Annual Cochise County Fair in Douglas, Arizona and received a check for $200. Of course, the resolution kept the winner “secret”, so we do not know who the winner is (besides a local who saw the flag being announced at the fair).

Based on a news article from the time, the designer was Ken Carpenter of Sierra Vista. One of the county's supervisors said at the county fair that although this was for the centennial flag, it was possible another design could be picked to become the county's flag. It appears this has not come to fruition.
