The town of Myersville has a new flag that was flown for the first time on June 14, Flag Day, in front of the Myersville Municipal Center. Displaying the new flag Friday afternoon is Kathy Gaver, town clerk. The flag is the result of a competition that chose Tracy Wiser's design.

MYERSVILLE -- The first town flag, dedicated and hoisted on Flag Day at the Myersville Municipal Center, includes symbols that reflect the western Frederick County municipality. The idea of a flag was discussed for many years, said town Treasurer Ray Hinkle, but it is just now coming to fruition. Incorporated into the final design are things important to the town, Hinkle said. "We are an agricultural, church community, and the volunteer fire company and the trolley are important here," Hinkle said. The flag includes an "s" for siren, representing the fire company, a steeple for churches, a silo for agriculture and a trolley -- a Myersville mainstay for many years. Town residents were asked to submit their ideas for the flag. The Rev. Tracy Wiser, pastor of Harmony Church of the Brethren, has been credited with submitting ideas that were incorporated into the final design. The pastor's layout was chosen from about five or six submissions, Hinkle said. Wiser initially sent his ideas to the town for a sign at Doubs Park about two years ago, he said. They included a church steeple, trolley and fire hall. "I understand they incorporated some of my ideas," Wiser said. "It's a nice contribution to the community. It's nice to point out to my family and it will be a nice legacy." A flag and seal for the town was one of Mayor Wayne S. Creadick Jr.'s goals, Town Manager Kristin Aleshire said.  Town officials wanted to display the flag and seal at last week's Maryland Municipal League convention, Aleshire said. Myersville had been one of a few towns at the convention without a flag and seal. The town seal will be used on letterhead, and additional flags will be sold. The design submission went from paper to computer, followed by several meetings between the mayor and council and the designer, Aleshire said. It is important that Maryland's 102nd municipality have a flag, Creadick said at a recent town meeting. "The fire station and trolley have a special place in our hearts, and there's the sun in the background," he said. "God willing, the sun will always rise on Myersville."
