Lloyd's Register of American Yachts of 1963 lists the club, describing it as Formerly Essex Open Class Association, and adds Est. 1938. Indeed, that name is used in the obituary at http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/statistics/Officials/Wright_McCallip.html, which also mentions the relationship between the two clubs.
