The municipality of Gramado (35,875 inhabitants in 2018; 23,783 ha) is 
located 120 km north-east of Porto Alegre.
Gramado is Rio Grande do Sul's 
main tourist resort. The town hosts Brazil's biggest film festival, established 
in 1973 and registered as Cultural and Historical Heritage by State Law No. 
12,529 promulgated on 6 June 2006.
Gramado is named for "grama", "a 
lawn", referring to the place used by tropeiros and colonists crossing the 
mountains as a convenient camp. The place was first settled by Portuguese 
colonists in 1875, subsequently joined by German and Italian colonists coming 
from Caxias do Sul.
The municipality of Gramado was established by State Law 
No. 2,522 promulgated on 15 December 1954, separating from Taquara.

The flag and arms of Gramado are prescribed by Municipal Law 
No. 364 promulgated on 13 December 1972.
Article 1.
a) Coat of arms - 
Portuguese shield, in chief argent and vert (green) Vale do Quilombo with its 
heights, representing an orographic landmark of the municipality, dexter a 
stylized Brazilian pine proper, sinister on top three black swallows 1 and 2. 
Swallows, by their migratory characteristic and fidelity, represent tourism. The 
other two thirds of the coat of arms, per fess on a field gules (red) a three-storied 
house representing hotel industry in the town and azure (blue) the emblem of 
handcraft: a small hand saw argent crossed by a paintbrush or and a hammer of 
the same.
A scroll or inscribed in gules (red) "Gramado - Jardim das 
hortênsias" supported by a flowered branch of hydrangea proper. The shield 
surmounted by a three-towered mural crown or with, in the center, a big gate 
gules on each side two large windows of the same. The tower represents, beyond 
the rank of town, hospitality and friendship.
b) Flag - Three panels of 9 
units on 6 units red, yellow and green, featuring the Riograndense and national 
colors, charged in the center, on the yellow panel, with the coat of arms of 
Gramado with its symbols, scroll and supporters, in the colors described above.

promulgated on 19 April 1994, which changed item b) of Article 2 as follows:
b) Flag - Three panels of 9 units on 6 units blue, yellow and green, 
featuring the Riograndense and national colors, charged in the center, on the 
yellow panel, the coat of arms of Gramado with its symbols, scroll and 
supporters, in the colors described above.
