Elterlein Coat of Arms

Shield Sable with base Vert topped by an embattled gate lodge Or masoned Sable with port and windows of the same, topped by two pitch roofs Gules topped by balls Or, flanked by two annexed houses of the same, the dexter one charged with an escutcheon Or parted by a saltire Sable, the sinister one charged with an escutcheon bendy of four of Gules and Argent.
Meaning:
The village belonged to the County of Hartenstein. It developed to a city without fortifications in 1406. Local rulers had been the Burgraves of Meißen, represented by the dexter escutcheon. They sold the city to the Lords of Schönburg, represented by the sinister escutcheon, who confirmed the city rights in 1489. In 1559 the city was acquired by the Electorate of Sachsen. Mining of silver and ore had been important since the 15th century but mining declined. Hammer mills, nailers and needlers remained in the city. Afterwards textiles industry became important. Two paper mills were established, also a factory for the production of panel sheets. The gate is symbolising the status of a city.
