Heldburg Coat of Arms

Shield Gules a lion rampant Or supporting an embattled tower Argent masoned Sable.
Meaning:
In 837 parts of the village were donated to the Benedictine Fulda Imperial Abbey. A local fortress was first mentioned in 1323, which had been ancestral seat of the Counts of Henneberg, who ceded the village to the Burgraves of Nürnberg. In 1374 it was acquired by the Wettin kin. Beneath the castle e settlement developed, which gained city rights in 1387 and had a council and the low level cognisance since 1396. In the 16th century city walls were built. Between 1680 and 1826 the city had been part of the Duchy of Sachsen-Hildburghausen, between 1826 and 1918 of the Duchy of Sachsen-Meiningen. The pattern was displayed on local seals from 1431 and 1576, is however probably older. The lion probably is alluding to the local rulers. Another version of the arms displayed the tower as golden, the lion as barry of red and white and the background tinctures as blue. Those arms are the arms of Thüringen with an additional tower, probably alluding to the fortress. Heldburg is the seat of Heldburger Unterland.
