Geviert; Feld 1 und 4: in Gold ein schwarzer, golden nimbierter, rot bewehrter Doppeladler, die Brust belegt mit einem goldenen Schild mit einem Fürstenhut, über den Adlerköpfen schwebend eine Kaiserkrone mit roten Kappen, in den Fängen ein goldenes Zepter und einen goldenen Reichsapfel haltend, darunter eine rote Streugabel über einem roten Kamm; Feld 2 und 3: neunmal von Schwarz und Gold geteilt, belegt mit einem schrägrechten, grünen Rautenkranz.“

Shield quartered; 1st and 4th quarter Or a double headed eagle Sable, nimbed Or and armed Gules, holding a sceptre Or by his dexter claw and an orb Or by his sinister claw, upon his breast an inescutcheon Or charged with a prince's coronet proper, in chief an impending imperial crown proper, in base a fork Gules with with two beaks over a comb, both Gules and in fess; 2nd and 3rd quarter barry of ten of Sable and Or superimposed by a crancelin Vert.
Meaning:
Saalfeld was an important city and from 1680-1745 the capital of the Duchy of Sachsen-Saalfeld, which had however no full sovereignty and was dependant from the authorities in Gotha in case of external affairs.This is symbolised by the arms of Saxony in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. The 1st and the 4th quarters show the arms of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolfstadt.
