Lichtenstein Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale; at dexter Gules a gate tower Argent with a dome flanked by two turrets, windows Sable, port Gules with portcullis Argent and flanked by two wreaths Argent; at sinister bendy of four of Gules and Argent.
A village existed since the late 12th century. The Lords of Schönburg built a castle, which was mentioned first in 1286. Probably in the 13th century a settlement was established under the castle as economic centre of the Lordship of Lichtenstein. It was first mentioned as a city in 1446. As new town of Lichtenstein Callnberg was founded in 1708, became independent in 1712 and gained city rights in 1725. Lichtenstein and Callnberg were united again in 1920. The arms display the former arms of both cities. The arms of Lichtenstein proper with the gate tower were known from seals, which were in use from 1450 until 1919. The arms of Callnberg had been simply the family arms of its former rulers.
