About the flag

It is a fairily typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain green background (a canting flag). Flag and arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário do Governo : I Série in 1936.08.25.

The arms are Argent between two poplars Vert erradicated Sable each interwined with a vine of the Same and fruiting each a bunch of grapes Purple, in chief a grindwheel Gules and in base a fess wavy Azure. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA VERDE".
Meaning:
"Vila verde" means "green town" and thus the flag (but not the coat of arms) is canting.

Plain (monocoloured) portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have variations without arms : plain flags always carry the coat of arms.

Presentation of Vila Verde

Vila Verde municipality had 46 579 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of 58 communes covering 227,20 km². It is part of Braga District, traditional province Minho, 1999 ref. adm. region Entre Douro e Minho, C.C.R. / NUTS II Norte, and NUTS III Cávado.
