Presentation of Zagorje ob Savi

Zagorje ob Savi had municipality status before the 1990s. The attribute "ob Savi" means "on the river Sava". "Zagorje" is a general term for a place "behind the hills", used also in the name of a region in Croatia (Krapinsko-Zagorska County) and possibly in some other place names in Slovenia.

The coat of arms and the flag of Zagorje ob Savi are shown in Banderas municipales de Eslovenia [drn96i], published in Banderas [ban] #58 (March 1996), referring to Uradni Vestnik Zabauja [Zasavja], 8/11.

The flag of Zagorje ob Savi was adopted on 21 April 1992. It is a banner of the municipal arms, in proportions 1:2. The flag is divided from the chief sinister corner radiating in arches into four unequal fields, green, blue, black and white. It is said that the colours represent vegetation (green), river Sava (blue), coal mines (black) and bright future (white).

Stanič & Jakopič [j2s05] give the colour specifications as:
- Green: HKS 54
- Blue, HKS 47.

The strict heraldic view would deny this "emblem" the right to be called a coat of arms since it defies proper blazoning.

Stanič & Jakopič [j2s05] write that the curved lines in the current coat of arms are inspired by the coat of arms of the Gallenberg family, who ruled the region in the 13th century, "Gules a pile inverted embowed argent".

The coat of arms of Zagorje ob Savi shown in Zalokar's book [zal90] pictures the symbols of people's liberation struggle in the Second World War (flames), of the Socialist revolution (star), of industry (cog-wheel) and of mining (hammers). It seems that the basic colour pattern (green, purple, black, white) of this coat of arms has provided the inspiration for the current coat of arms and flag.
