Title: Four ‘Review of Reviews’ Competitors Successful
Medium: article in a non-vexillological source: periodical
Language: English
Source title: Review of Reviews
Source number (date): (1901.09)
Source pages: (1+5) ?
Source edition (publisher: place): (unknown) (Australia)
The caption actually reads:
Review of Reviews Federal Flag adopted as the National
Flag by the Commonwealth Government
The article is headed:
Four ‘Review of Reviews’ Competitors
Successful
This shows the agenda of the Review of Reviews — it
was a populist magazine congratulating itself on the contribution
of the magazine’s competition to the government
competition.
The article then began:
What is the flag of Australia? The design on the cover
of the present issue “gives answer” — for it has
been chosen from over 30,000 others by the five expert judges, and
recommended for adoption as the Commonwealth flag.
So, the significance that some attribute to the cover’s
caption is misleading — it is only journalistic shorthand
for a more complex set of facts as to the process whereby the
Australian flag was adopted.
For many years, the cover of the September 1901 issue of
Review of Reviews was unknown. The various state libraries
had the habit of binding old journals and removing the covers of
individual issues. A few years ago,
John Vaughan managed to locate a copy
of the journal with the cover intact. This particular copy has an
inscription which shows that it was previously owned by E. J.
Nuttal, one of the flag design competition winners. The cover and
the article have been reproduced as a facsimile edition and many
copies have been distributed by ANFA.
I am not aware of any website that has reproduced the full text
and illustrations of the article.

Title: Flags of the Nations
Medium: chart
Language: English
Edition (publisher: place): The National Bank of Australasia: Melbourne (Australia)
Edition date: 1965.11.01
Format: 227×351 mm
Remarks: Printed on both sides. 101 to 105 national
flags; 10 Australian flags.
The Flags of the Nations flag chart was published the
National Australia Bank Ltd. (formerly The National Bank of
Australasia Ltd.) intermittently since the mid to late 1950s.
As a child / teenager I use to visit a local branch of this bank to
obtain a free copy of each new edition. My earliest copy is dated 1
Nov. 1965 [a9u65]. It is believed that the
Bank first started to produced this chart when it became a sponsor
of The Scout and Girl Guides Associations of Australia
and its Jamborees in the 1950s. Throughout its history
this Chart was printed on both sides.
The Flag Society of Australia (now
called Flags Australia) first became involved with the preparation
of this Chart early 1984, when John
Edwards was invited by the Bank to review and correct any
errors in the then existing Chart
[a9u83a]: A new corrected edition of this
Chart was published in July 1984 [a9u84b]
At this point of time the National Australia Bank was also a
sponsor of the then forthcoming 13th.
I.C.V. in Melbourne (Sept. 1989). This edition began a staged
expansion of the Charts Australian and international flag
contents. I was involved in further editions and content
expansions in June 1990 [a9u90] and June
1992 [a9u92a].
The Bank also asked me to prepare
another edition of the Flags of the Nations chart in
the mid 1990s, but due to internal Bank restructuring
it was never completed. Had this latest edition been printed,
all flags would have appeared in their correct proportions, instead
of the previous uniform 2:3 for the international flags.
My personal collection of the Flags of the Nations chart
covers the following editions:
- 1 Nov. 1965 [a9u65],
- 17 Aug. 1967 [a9u67],
- c.1969 [a9u69] (undated),
- 28 Oct. 1971 [a9u71a],
- Nov. 1973 [a9u73],
- Jan. 1977 [a9u77a],
- Aug. 1978 [a9u78],
- May 1980 [a9u80],
- Jan. 1982 [a9u82a],
- Jan. 1983 [a9u83],
- July 1983 [a9u83a],
- July 1984 [a9u84b]
(reprints Aug. 1985 and Jan. 1987 with a new cover),
- April 1988 [a9u88a]
(reprint April 1989),
- June 1990 [a9u90]
(reprint Mar. 1991),
- and the last new edition in Nov. 1992
[a9u92a] (which was reprinted in Jan.
1994).
Over the years of its life, this Chart became and proved to be a
very useful method for the Bank to expand its operations throughout
Australia, particularly with School bank accounts, as a lot of
classrooms has this Chart on the wall and the Bank would often send
enough copies for each student to one or more. They were also given
out free of charge from local branches upon request.
I was very sad to witness the ending of this worthy Chart,
which, by default, was the first regularly updated Australian
vexillological publication and had also become an institution to
the people and schools of Australia.

"ISBN 00-644-1623-X" doesn’t check. The corrected
ISBN 0-644-01623-X, which proofs and also makes more sense, is my
own assumption, on the assumption of an interpretation error.
Peter Hans van den Muijzenberg, 24 Feb 2008
"ISBN 0644 1623 X" is wrong in the publication. I have
accurately transcribed the ISBN number as it appears on page 2
of the booklet it only has 8 numbers and the letter X.
However, I have looked up the publication in the catalogue of the
National Library of Australia and it gives an extra 0 in the
number: ISBN 00 644 1623 X.

Reviewed in [edj84c].
Rosella-Lipton Pty Ltd was a retailer of tea in Australia and it
produced the equivalent of a cigarette cards promotional give away
in the 1980s. The Crux review
[edj84c] provides the following
information:
Flags of the World poster and set of 50 cards.
Produced by Rosella-Lipton Pty Ltd, April 1984. The poster size was
68cm (height) by 98cm width. The poster illustrated 170 flags and
the 50 flag cards were intended to be stuck around the edge of the
poster.
Ralph Kelly, 22 Feb 2008
John Edwards [edj84c]
review had the benefit of contact with and assistance from
Rosella-Lipton Pty Ltd. He did not identify any specific author,
so it was probably the marketing department of the company. It is
possible that the promotion was not confined to Australia. The flag
cards were inserts into packets of Liptons Tea. Liptons is still a
major global tea company, part of Unilever (the Australian company
is a subsidiary of the UK part of this Anglo-Dutch company).
Edwards closely reviewed the illustrations and came to the
conclusion that most of the artwork came from The International
Flag Book in Colour [ped71b]
published by Blandford in 1971. Oddly, he did not identify the
author of that book as Christian Fogd
Pedersen.
